30 Days: Day 23 – Time

One of my favorite things about doing photography projects is watching how an idea develops and morphs throughout the project.  For example, for day 23′s Time photo, I had a wonderful idea about photographing the progression of time.  More specifically, I wanted to show how much my children have changed since they were born.  Of course, by the time I finally got around to being able to actually take the photos, they were already in bed, and taking photos of them in their sleep seemed a tad creepy.  So the challenge was then to figure out another way of showing the progression of time.  I thought about doing another long exposure, but that was the focus of day 1′s challenge and I wanted to keep doing things differently.

In the end, I decided to take a literal approach to the progression.  On some clocks, you can see the second hand moving as a steady smooth movement around the clock face, but my desk clock is one of the ones that actually ticks off each second.  The idea I had for this concept was to catch the exact moment when the hand changes to the next second.  The photo below is the best representation of that change that I was able to capture.  There’s just a slight vibration visible, and while the effect isn’t very strong, I like how it turned out and the placement.
